Common Questions About Sash Window Repairs
Explore our frequently asked questions to learn more about sash window repairs and how we can help restore the functionality and beauty of your windows.
What exactly is a sash window?
A sash window, sometimes called a double hung window consists of a two timber sash’s that slide up and down. These windows originated in the UK, and are often found in period homes. Traditionally these windows operate using cords, weights and pulleys, however post 50’s homes may have spiral sash balances (look like rods going down the sides of the sash), instead of pulleys.
What types of sash window repairs do you offer?
Only timber sash windows are repaired (not aluminium). There are two types of sash’s we repair, the traditional sash’s with weights and pulleys and the spiral balanced sash’s.
Do you repair the top and bottom sash’s?
Not many people are aware that sash windows have two components, a top sash and a bottom sash. Both these sash’s should open, however most homes will have the top sash nailed or painted shut.
Why should you fix the top and bottom sash?
Sash Window Repairs advocates fixing both the top and bottom sash for a few reasons. Firstly, repairing them both keeps them functioning as they were originally intended and can assist with the re-sale value of your home. Practically, opening both the top and bottom allows for greater circulation, as the hot air escapes through the top and the colder air comes through the bottom. Additionally, being able to open just the top means you can allow for air flow without compromising the safety and security of you home. (This is great if you like to have air flow through the night, or have small children/pets)
What areas do you service?
Our primary service include the inner city suburbs of Melbourne however we also extend our services throughout the Mornington Peninsula and other areas of Victoria for larger scale projects.
Do you provide free quotes for potential repair work?

Do you offer draft-proofing?
Yes, we can draftproof your windows. we will install good quality brush-pile, machined into your beads, so that the are of minimal disturbance and visibility. Your windows will be draft-proofed and also not rattle, nor bring in as much noise anymore.
Should I repair the windows before or after I paint them?
Technically, sash windows can be repaired both before and after they are painted. However, if they are painted beforehand they will need to be touched up again after work has been completed, as there may be some minor paint damage. It is preferable to get them repaired first and then painted. You will be then able to access all parts of the sash (including the meeting rail), and will not have to re-paint them.
Do you put new glass in?
Yes, Sash Window Repairs can install new glass if neccesary. However, this glass needs to meet industry standards. The original glass installed in period homes is often 2.5-3mm thick, and according to industry standards (Australian Standard AS1288-2006) might now need to be 4mm thick if replaced. This will mean the sash will be heavier and may also need heavier weights installed.
Will you install new flyscreens?
Yes, Sash Window Repairs can make and install new flyscreens for your windows.
Do you double-glaze windows?
No, Sash Window Repairs does not offer double glazing.
Do you paint windows?
Unfortunately, Sash Window Repairs does not paint the sash’s, but is happy to either refer you to a painter, or offer you tips on how to paint them yourselves.
